Pancake breakfast raises plight of poor

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The Salvation Army will prepare a free pancake breakfast Sunday to commemorate National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, and the public is invited.

The breakfast takes place at Gateway Park, below the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A church service will follow at 10 a.m. with music for the service provided by The Salvation Army Tucson Amphi Worship Team. Yuma Capt. Jonathan Harvey will present the sermon.

"We're really hoping the community comes together," said Harvey. "We need to bring awareness that homelessness and hunger are very real in Yuma County and to bring support to those folks in prayer."

A prayer walk around the park will feature "stations of homelessness and hunger" with displays that focus on the problems Yuma County faces.

Harvey noted there are a number of local organizations who also support those in need. Yuma Community Food Bank will provide the food and Crossroads Mission will participate as they have in prior similar events.

"The key to this is that we can do something about this as a community," Harvey said. "That's why we're bringing the community together for the service."
