Woodard Junior High School was heavily damaged during a burglary Saturday morning, according to the Yuma Police Department.

Ernest Eugene Herrera, 20, was arrested at the scene and is in custody. He is facing charges of third-degree burglary and aggravated criminal damage.

At 8:50 a.m., police officers responded to a 911 call at the school, 2250 S. 8th Ave. They contacted a member of the school staff, who reported a burglary in the library.

During a check of the campus, officers discovered that the burglary encompassed a large portion of the school, including administration offices, classrooms, cafeteria and music room, and extensive damage had been done to property inside.

The damage included 35 to 40 school and administrative computer systems, audio visual equipment, windows, carpet, walls, furnishings and other items. Damage was estimated at more than $150,000, according to YPD.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call YPD at 783-4421 or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
