A Cibola High student was among 13 high school students honored Thursday by the Arizona Supreme Court for their essay writing skills.

Cory Stevens was among students in 10th through 12th-grade invited to write on the theme "How Should the Courts Uphold the Rule of Law?" in the 2008 Law Day Essay Contest.

Nine essays were submitted and judged by a volunteer panel of civic leaders, who selected one winner from each county. As Yuma County's winner, Stevens received a $250 scholarship from the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education.

Stevens, the other winners and their parents attended a luncheon in their honor Thursday, during which they were announced as the winners.

May 1 was proclaimed as Law Day in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to strengthen the nation’s heritage of liberty, justice and equality under the law.

Other winners were Amalia Skilton, Robert Nejbauer and Sinead Steverson of Maricopa County; Britanie Ames , Heather Singell and Jessica Edmiston, all of Cochise County; Kamber Turley and Rebecca Pearce, Navajo County; Danielle Font, Santa Cruz County; Christian Ortega and Gus Peru of Pima County; and Pedro Espitia, Pima County.
