Yuma woman killed in accident
A 54-year-old Yuma woman died this weekend near Jacumba, Calif. after she drove off Interstate 8 and rolled her vehicle down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The woman, who was the sole occupant of a 2006 Nissan Sentra, has been identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office as Martha Lidia Jimenez. Her next of kin have been notified.
According to CHP Officer Brian Pennings, the accident happened on Saturday morning at approximately 6:50 a.m. He said Jimenez had been traveling westbound on I-8 when, for an unknown reason, her car went off the side of the freeway between the east and westbound lanes.
Pennings said Jimenez's Sentra continued down onto Carrizo Gorge Road underpass, where it collided with a Ford F-150 pickup truck and rolled multiple times on an embankment.
“The accident could have been much worse, fortunately it wasn't,” Pennings said. “The Sentra land on the roof of the pickup. The six occupants inside were not injured.”
Responding medical personnel pronounced Jimenez, who sustained head injuries, dead at the scene. An autopsy has yet to be scheduled.
