Got goat heads? - The Wellton Mohawk NRCD has made available puncture vine weevils to local residents at no cost. The weevils are small insects that you place on the goat head plant; there they burrow into the seed destroying it. Weevils may be picked up today at the Wellton Mohawk Irrigation District warehouse after 8 a.m. They will be obtainable on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wellton library - September is National Library Card sign-up month. Visit the library and apply for a card. They are free to county residents.

  Story time is 11 a.m. Wednesday for children ages 3 to 5. There are computers and cool programs in the new "Teen Tank" room for ages 13 to 17.

  The library has a wonderful display area for new books and best-sellers, including fiction, nonfiction, westerns and large type. If you have a display you would like to share, call the library at 785-9575.

  GED preparation classes are available every other Thursday. Call for more information.

  Foothills branch library - We are now in our new home at 13226 E. South Frontage Road with a new number, 373-6520.

  Story time will resume Wednesday.

  Wellton-Mohawk Valley Kiwanis Club - The annual Fishing Derby will start with sign-up at 6:30 a.m. and the derby from 7 to 9 a.m. Oct. 4. There are four divisions: preschool and kindergarten, second and third grade, fifth and sixth grade, and eighth grade.

  One lucky fisherman from each division will win a surprise gift. The derby will be held at the Butterfield Golf Course pro shop pond.

  The Kiwanis birthday calendars for 2008-09 are now available for $5. They may be purchased from Susan Dodd at WMIDD office or from any Kiwanian.

  Town of Wellton - Arizona Western College athletic teams participated in their annual "Day of Champs." This is a community service project they use to gear up for their training camp and do work throughout Yuma County. This year their project was cleaning up the rose garden on Los Angeles Avenue.

  Emergency donations can be made to aid the victims of the two trailer fires from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Excel Group, 28671 Los Angeles Ave. For more information, call 341-4440.

  Pool hours are 1 to 5 p.m. weekends and 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays for in- school session until Saturday. Family Nite at the pool will be 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Fridays. Children must be accompanied by a parent.

  Mohawk Valley 4-H Club - The club will meet the second Monday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mohawk Valley School cafeteria. Call Mrs. Newman at 785-4568 for more information.

  Yuma County Health Department - The health department offers adult and children’s immunizations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Friday of each month at walk-in clinics throughout the county. For more information, call 317-4559.

  Dobson museum - The museum in Tacna is still open and available for viewing by appointment only. Call Windy at 785-4013 to make an appointment.

  Animal Guardian Angels - The Thrift Shoppe hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 28809 San Jose Ave. (across from the Baptist church). For more information, call 785-4819.

  Pet wellness vaccination clinics are held from 9 to 11 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month.

  Wellton Senior Nutrition - Hot meals are served from 11 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at the Community Center on Dome Street. For more information, call 785-4585.

  VFW Post No. 6790 Men's and Ladies Auxiliary - There will be a flag-raising ceremony and celebration at 10 a.m. Friday in honor of  P.O.W. Day. Today is the last day for taco dinners to be served from 4 to 6 p.m. for a $4 donation. From 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, there will be a steak dinner with all the trimmings for a donation of $9.

  Sundays through Saturdays from 4 to 7 p.m. is happy hour. Breakfasts are served at 8 a.m. Saturdays - All-U-Can-Eat pancakes for a donation of $3 per person or ham and eggs for a $5 donation. Hamburgers/cheeseburgers and fries with all the trimmings will be served Mondays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Burgers are $4/$4.50 donation. There is a pool tournament, double elimination, at 1 p.m. Wednesdays. The entry fee is $5.

  All events are open to the public. For additional information, call 785-4225. All proceeds go to the programs supported by the VFW, 29389 Oakland Ave. in Wellton.

  RTA Hospice and palliative care - Hospice volunteers are needed in Yuma and surrounding areas. Hospice provides compassionate care when a cure is no longer possible.

  Hospice has a teen volunteer training program. The next teen volunteer training is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11. Call 344-6100 to register for the volunteer teen training.

  Habitat for Humanity - Collection sites have been set up to assist the public in recycling aluminum cans and the Nos. 1 and 2 plastic bottles in Wellton and east county. Each of the locations will have an "Enviro green" Habitat collection house. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, call 783-3993.

  Collection locations are at Coyote Wash Road, Pete's Body Shop, Animal Guardian Angel Thrift Store, Mota's Market, Sun Country RV Park, Coach Stop RV Park, Wellton Community Presbyterian Church, Tier Drop RV Park, Ligurta Station, Circle K Store, Wellton School, Del Sol Grocery and Citrus City Community Center.

  Yuma County Area Transit - YCAT offers services from Wellton to Yuma and connecting services to many places in Yuma County including Yuma Palms, Cocopah Casino, YRMC and Wal-Mart stores, with four trips a day.

  Dateland branch library - This branch of the Yuma County library is located within the Dateland school. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, except that it is closed the last Thursday of every month, but open on Monday of that week.

  Roll branch library - This branch of the Yuma County library is located within the Mohawk Valley school. All library programs are free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. For more information, call Lucy Shaw at 785-3701 on days when the library is open.

  Antelope Union High School - Open house will be begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria. Junior varsity and varsity volleyball will play at home Tuesday against Tonopah Valley. Varsity football will play at home against Phoenix Christian at 7 p.m. Oct. 3.

  Dateland Elementary School - Extended days will begin next Monday and Tuesday. The sports tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at Mohawk.

  Wellton Elementary School - Today is Diamondback Day - wear your favorite D-Back clothes. Game day will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mohawk.

  The sports tournament will begin 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at Mohawk.

  Mohawk Valley Elementary School - There will be games against Wellton at home 2 p.m. Tuesday. The three-school tournament will be played 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at Mohawk.
