LULAC offering scholarships for high school seniors
SAN LUIS, Ariz. — The League of United Latin American Citizens is offering college scholarships of $250 for high school seniors from south Yuma County.
San Luis, Ariz.-based Council 1091 of LULAC began accepting scholarship applications earlier this month and will continue to do so through March 25.
Eligible to apply are seniors of Hispanic ethnicity residing in Somerton, San Luis, Gadsden or other areas of the south county who plan to attend a community college or university in the fall. They must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and must be either U.S. citizens or legal U.S. residents.
As part of their applications, seniors must include a copy of a letter of admission to the colleges or universities they plan to attend, high school report cards and letters of recommendation from teachers, and write essays explaining their personal and professional goals.
In choosing scholarship recipients, the council will consider such criteria and the content of applicants' essays and their performances in interviews, said Leticia Aragon, president of the LULAC council.
The scholarship money distributed by the LULAC council comes from fundraising activities the council does throughout the year, as well as contributions from LULAC's national organization.
