State officials look for fraudulent mail in Yuma

The Arizona Attorney General's Office is asking for your old mail.

Residents are asked to bring junk mail to a representative from the attorney general's office in Yuma today. The representative will collect and sort the mail and take legal actions against companies or people who violate Arizona's consumer protection laws.

The goal is to find con artists who target older residents through mail solicitations.

The Attorney General's Consumer Protection and Advocacy Section will be looking for fraudulent offers of lottery winnings, charity solicitations, magazine subscriptions and other attempts to mislead or defraud Arizona residents.

The Seniors Strike Back program is a proactive effort to reduce the number of scams being sent by mail, Goddard stated in a news release. The national Do Not Call List coupled with e-mail spam blockers make it more difficult for con artists to separate people from their money. Mail is quickly becoming a preferred tool for criminals to scam Arizona seniors, according to the release.

In Yuma, the representative will be present at the following times and locations:

-9 a.m. at Somerton Senior Center, 239 W. Canal St.

-10:30 a.m. at San Luis Senior Center, 790 E. Juan Sanchez Blvd.

-12 p.m. at Yuma Catholic Community Service Senior Center, 690 E. 32nd St.
