World Habitat Day draws attention to need for housing

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Habitat for Humanity of Yuma is observing World Habitat Day Monday by kicking off its Build on Faith campaign.

"Habitat for Humanity of Yuma is a strong advocate for moving families from substandard living to the American dream of home ownership," said Kathi Marcus, board chairman. "With the support of the Yuma community, this dream is only a hammer away."

During October and into November, local congregations and community members can contribute to Build on Faith. To promote the campaign to congregations and organizations, call Habitat at 783-3993 for calendars, posters, fliers, brochures and the promotional materials.

In addition to contributing financially, people can support Habitat by working on a building site, serving on a committee, helping with an event or in the office, recycling or lending a hand in the Habitat ReStore.

World Habitat Day, an annual event created by the United Nations, falls on the first Monday in October and unites people of goodwill and organizations around the cause of housing to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to the cause of eliminating poverty housing. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built more than 250,000 houses worldwide, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1 million people.
