Sheriff's office ID's woman in apparent murder-suicide

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the woman found dead in an apparent murder-suicide inside a Foothills home Wednesday.

The woman has been identified as Briana Kilty, 34, of Yuma.

An 11-year-old female juvenile found unharmed inside the residence has since been placed into temporary care by Child Protective Services.

According to the sheriff's office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Robert C. Nelson fatally shot Kilty, his girlfriend, then killed himself. Nelson, 36, had been a Border Patrol agent since 2005 and was assigned to the Yuma Sector.

The sheriff's office says it received a call from Nelson's sister Wednesday saying that her brother told her he had killed his girlfriend and was going to kill himself. Deputies arrived at the residence in the 11800 block of Calle Gaudi in Mesa Del Sol, set up a perimeter and evacuated a nearby house, sheriff's officials said.

After failed attempts to make contact with anyone inside, a robot was sent into the residence. Once inside, the robot located Nelson's body in one of the rooms. Deputies then entered and secured the residence while the robot continued ahead, searching each room. Kilty's body was located in another room of the residence.

Nelson was not on duty at the time of the incident, according to Border Patrol Agent Spencer Tippets.
