Not too late to register for Polar Plunge

It's still not too late to grab your cape and mask, jump into some freezing cold water and experience the “thrill of the chill” while raising money for Special Olympics as part of the Yuma Police Department's Polar Plunge.

The second annual Polar Plunge will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St. Yuma Mayor Alan Krieger, City Administrator Greg Wilkinson and newly chosen Police Chief John Lekan will all be taking part.

In addition, Sgt. Clint Norred said, YPD's entire public affairs unit will be taking the plunge.

Norred said that those brave enough to take the plunge can still register the day of the event. Registration is $25, and all plungers receive a commemorative towel.

This year's theme is Superheroes, so participants are encouraged to don their capes and masks and take a “flying leap” into the freezing water.

The event will be held at the deep end of the aquatic center's Olympic-size swimming pool. Norred said he expects the water to be about 60 degrees if not colder.

Norred said nearly a ton of ice was added to the pool for last year's event in March, and he expects to be adding just as much if not more this time. Since the event is being held earlier this year, Norred says he expects it to be colder.

All payments are tax-deductible and go toward Special Olympics Arizona. There will be awards for the top fundraiser, best costume and best team costume.
