Woman killed in I-8 crash

January 4, 2008 - 10:11 PM

A woman was killed Friday morning when the van she was a passenger in was involved in a single-vehicle rollover accident near Dateland.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the woman, whose name was not listed in the preliminary report, died after the 1994 Chevrolet van carrying eight passengers and a driver crashed at Milepost 63 on Interstate 8.

The van, which had Mexico license plates, had been traveling westbound. Seven other passengers were also injured in the wreck, and one was unhurt.

The uninjured passenger was taken to Dateland to await family members to pick him up. Of the injured passengers, four were flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix and three were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, also in Phoenix.

"One of the injured passengers who was taken to St. Joseph's was still in the emergency room as of 2:30 p.m. (Friday)," said Sgt. William Duff of the DPS.

Duff said the cause of the crash is still under investigation but there was no evidence of tire failure.

None of the other passengers was named in the report, but the next of kin of the deceased woman was notified on the scene.

"Her husband was the front-seat passenger and son of the driver," Duff said.
