Stewart Vincent Wolfe playground closed for maintenance
The Stewart Vincent Wolfe Creative Playground, located at the Yuma West Wetlands, will be closed through Feb. 9 to allow the city to perform maintenance.
The city will be removing the sand around the playground structure and installing a new protective ground cover known as Pebble Flex.
"We need to close the playground for several weeks to perform these functions," Greg Hyland, the city's director of communications and public affairs, said in a news release. "But we wanted to wait until after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to give our children a chance to use the playground while they're out of school."
The work is being done during what city Parks and Recreation Director Becky Chavez says is the slowest month for park use. "We need to remove the sand and install the Pebble Flex and we felt this was the best time to do it."
The sand around the playground structures was installed temporarily last spring until a new type of play surface could be found and purchased.
The playground was closed beginning Wednesday.
The other facilities located in the Yuma West Wetlands, including the playground equipment located near the pond, will remain open.
