YPD officers exchange gunfire with suspect

No injuries; man taken into custody

Yuma Police Department officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect near 10th Street and 5th Avenue at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

No one was injured and the suspect was taken into custody by YPD, according to police spokesman Clint Norred.

Police were dispatched to the 900 block of 6th Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to Norred, after receiving a call of a man making threats with a gun.

When police arrived, Norred said, they confronted the suspect and he fired his weapon at them. Police fired back.

Norred said on the scene that he did not have details about how many officers fired their weapons or what precipitated the "threats with a gun" call, but police said no one was injured.

The male suspect was taken into custody by police for booking less than two hours after the incident began. The suspect's name was not released at the scene. Norred said updates on the case would be forthcoming.

As of 6 p.m. Saturday, police were still searching the area for evidence.

Traffic on 10th Street was blocked off in the area from 4th to 6th avenues. Norred said the area would probably reopen later Saturday night.
