Yuma police investigating stolen rent checks

The Yuma Police Department is investigating the theft of rent payments being stolen out of drop boxes at several apartment complexes.

“It is a recent trend that we are seeing happen,” said Sgt. Leanne Worthen, a spokeswoman for the Yuma Police Department. “The drop boxes have been tampered with, and some checks are missing.”

Worthen said Yuma police are not releasing the names of the apartment complexes yet because the investigation is still ongoing. She did say, however, that at least seven are involved. The thefts happened between Nov. 3 and Nov. 7.

What police want to do, she said, is inform the public and warn residents who live in apartments that they could potentially be victims.

Anyone who sees someone tampering with drop boxes or other suspicious activity is urged to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Yuma police also believe there may be unreported victims in these thefts and encourages anyone who may be a victim to call YPD at 373-4700. If you have any information about these thefts, call Detective Montana at 373-4670, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
