Dairy truck knocks down two utility poles
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A dairy delivery truck that was making deliveries in Gadsden got caught on a power line, knocking down two utility poles, with one of them landing on a house and a business.
Robby Rodriguez, spokesman for the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department said the Shamrock delivery truck was at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Gadsden Street at about 10:35 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Although no injuries were reported, Rodriguez said electrical power lines were on the ground in front of the business, which had about 20 people inside the building at the time.
Rodriguez said the customers were all kept inside the building until APS arrived on scene to secure the power lines. There was no one inside the home the utility pole landed on.
Complicating matters, the downed utility pole and power lines was near the Gadsden School District bus barn and Wednesday was a early school day.
As a result, Rodriguez said school buses needed to leave the area in order to pick up school children and had to be redirected out of the area.
Sixth Street was temporarily closed on both the East and West ends of the street and the Yuma County Sheriff's Office was directing traffic in and out of the area.
The Rural/Metro Fire Department also responded to the call and remained on scene until it was cleared. SCFD turned the scene over to Rural/Metro when they arrived.
Rodriguez did not know how many APS customers were out of power as a result of the downed power poles and APS could not be reached.
