Late AWC president honored

The college where former Arizona Western College President Ken Borland served as the first president has named the presidential office in his honor.

Borland, who died in 2006 in Yuma after a battle with cancer, was the first president at Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill., from 1967 to 1974.

A glass engraved plaque has been mounted over the door leading to the president's office, a Highland news release said.

"The foundation and the college appreciate the generosity of the Borland family," said Susan Atherton, executive director of the HCC Foundation. "The dedication (is) a wonderful celebration of Ken's life here at Highland and the legacy he left behind."

A reception was held in October to unveil the plaque which Borland's family, friends and colleagues attended.

Borland moved to Yuma in 1977 when he was appointed to be president for AWC and retired in 1984.
