Information released on canal fire

Yuma Fire Department officials have released more information about a Wednesday night fire that blazed on the East Main Canal.

The fire, which started at about 7:30 p.m., began in the south 1800 block of the canal. When firefighters arrived, according to YFD's news release, they discovered approximately 150 feet of brush and palm trees on fire on the hillside east of the canal and the walking path.

Flames were seen shooting at least 50 feet into the air, the release stated, and were visible from many areas in south Yuma. Several homes overlooking the fire were threatened but, according to the release, none sustained any damage.

Initial firefighting efforts knocked down the flames by 9:30 p.m. and equipment and personnel remained on the scene to monitor and put out hot spots. Personnel continued to work on the scene Thursday, according to YFD officials, spraying down foam to keep the fire from starting again.

Personnel and a fire engine from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma assisted in the firefighting effort, according to the release.

YFD officials are still determining the cause of the blaze.
