Woman struck, killed in Foothills

A 40-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a car late Sunday night in the Foothills.

According to Capt. Eben Bratcher of the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, at about 10:17 p.m. deputies responded to the 12600 block of East South Frontage Road in reference to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision.

Bratcher said the investigation at the scene revealed that William J. Wesselman, 80, of Yuma, was traveling eastbound on South Frontage Road in a 2007 Hyundai Entourage when he struck Shelly Lynn Hardan. She was a resident of Yuma as well as Banks, Ore.

Hardan was walking east in the eastbound lane of South Frontage Road near the edge of the road when the collision occurred.

“She had been to the store and was pushing a grocery cart home,” Bratcher said. “There is no sidewalk out there. That area of the roadway has a gravel shoulder.”

Hardan was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor, according to officials.
