Annual Jaycees Silver Spur Rodeo and Parade this weekend

UPDATE: The Silver Spur Rodeo Parade lineup has been added to this story.

Something big's galloping out of the chute this weekend. It's the Yuma Jaycees annual Silver Spur Rodeo and Parade, a local favorite that organizers promise will pack even greater horsepower this year.

The number of performers for the rodeo is up. So are ticket sales. Jaycees President Loke Aulds says this tells her that her group has a winning formula on its hands and its something that the public can't wait to enjoy.

"This is THE rodeo in Yuma," Aulds said. "People know that this is the rodeo to see and that's why they keep coming back. This is a very popular event."

The Silver Spur Rodeo runs Friday through Sunday and the Silver Spur Rodeo Parade - another annual favorite - is set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

"Everything so far this year is up. Everything is bigger, which makes me happy," Aulds said. "The public's attention and excitement has been up, too. We've really been publicizing this event."

She added that the rodeo has become an enduring local event because rodeo represents a true all-American cultural touchstone.

"It brings back history," Aulds said. "Our country has always had a fascination with the cowboy and the Wild West.

Almost 120 entries will be featured in Saturday's parade, which is slated for 8:30 a.m. The parade will go north on 4th Avenue, beginning near 16th Street and 4th Avenue, ending near City Hall.

Aulds stressed that the parade and rodeo will boast quite a few big-name Jaycees dignitaries, too. Locally the parade will feature Aulds, the local president; her husband, the state president; plus Patrick Collins, a Yuman who is one of eight national vice presidents. But the names don't stop there. Coming to Yuma for the event is Denice O'Neil, the national president of Jaycees.

"Denice is just so much fun!" Aulds said. "She is just a dynamic woman. You really want to be around her. It's huge that she's coming here."

Rodeo performances are set for 1 p.m. each day, with Saturday boasting a 7 p.m. show, too. The venue will be the Yuma County Fairgrounds.

Tickets for the rodeo are available from the Western Warehouse, Crazy L See and Tack, Lerma's Feed and Western Wear, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and the fairgrounds' security office.
