Toddler drowns in Somerton canal
A 2-year-old girl drowned after falling into a canal Thursday afternoon.
According to Robby Rodriguez. spokesman for the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, at about 3:30 p.m. that day firefighters responded to the area of Garvin and Bingham Street near the canal for a possible drowning call.
Rodriguez said once on scene, firefighters met with Somerton Police officers who had already started performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child.
“When we arrived on scene, she had already been pulled from the water,” Rodriguez said.
The toddler was then immediately given to paramedics and loaded into a SCFD ambulance and taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where she later died.
Rodriguez said while this is the only drowning to happen this year, there has also been at least one drowning each of the past two years.
“We seem to have at least one a year,” Rodriguez said.
