Yard sale to aid band's trip to London
A yard sale Saturday will give the public a chance to get some bargains while helping a school marching band in San Luis, Ariz., pay for an overseas trip to London to perform in that city's New Year's Day parade.
The fundraising event will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rio Colorado Elementary School, 1055 N. Main St. in San Luis, and is open to the public.
Proceeds will go toward sending 90 members of the Gadsden Elementary School District's marching band to the 27th annual New Year's Day Parade and Festival organized by the city of London.
The estimated travel cost is $270,000. Band members and their parents have been holding fundraising events since last spring when the district received the formal invitation to take part in the parade.
Olivia Zepeda, Gadsden's assistant superintendent, has been organizing the yard sale during her free time, independently of her district duties.
“It is very important that we help our children, who will be representing us in a place so far away,” she said. “They have worked so hard, so we should be proud of them.”
Items for sale include toys, clothing and appliances. Zepeda said that up through Friday night, she will accepting donations of items.
