Phone scam warning issued

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a new telephone scam that tries to get people's bank account numbers.

In the scam, potential victims receive automated telephone calls with a recording that purports to be from their bank. The recording announces that there are problems with their account and that it may have been frozen.

The recording then asks the potential victims to input their account numbers, followed by their pin codes, via touchtone telephone.

The sheriff's office says anyone receiving such an automated call should not enter any account information or pin codes. They should also report the calls to local law enforcement agencies and to their financial institution.
