5 school board vacancies to be filled
The Yuma County School Superintendent's Office is accepting applications for five vacant school board positions at various local districts.
Somerton Elementary School District and Wellton Elementary School District each have two open spots, and another position is available for Yuma Elementary School District 1.
Yuma County School Superintendent Tom Tyree said Somerton previously had only one position open, but another became available when recently elected board member Carlos Gonzalez resigned after taking a job in the district.
Tyree said applicants cannot be employees of the district, nor can their spouses. Also, applicants have to live in the district for at least one year preceding the day of the election.
Applicants' letters of interest should include background, qualifications, reasons for wanting to serve, address and length of time living in the district. Letters can be submitted electronically to ckautzer@apscc.org or by mail to the Yuma County School Superintendent's Office, 210 S. 1st Ave., Yuma, AZ 85364.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 30.
Candidates will be interviewed during the week of Dec. 3, and Tyree hopes to swear in the new board members during the week of Dec. 10.
“We're looking for people who have the qualifications to serve as a school board member, someone who is willing to put the work and the time in to be prepared for school board meetings. We are looking for somebody who has a real balanced approach to issues, in other words an open mind as it relates to what is best for the students of the school district.
“We're also looking for someone who can work well with other board members and understands that the job is an important responsibility. Anybody who's willing to serve as a school board member, I believe that it is a very important role that anyone can serve in but one that's probably not always appreciated.”
