Assistance League wins Walmart cash
The Assistance League of Yuma has been awarded $5,000 by Walmart to help with its mission of giving low-income children in Yuma County clothes and shoes.
Mohawk Valley School District in Roll will benefit from the money given after the Assistance League of Yuma's Operation School Bell program was chosen for an award in Walmart's “12 Days of Giving” campaign on Facebook.
“As a very rural school with over 80 percent on free and reduced lunch, this program is a godsend. Operation School Bell allows us to send two groups of our students twice a year to come to its building to be clothed,” read a nominee spotlight posted to the social media site. “The 100-mile trip is a special treat for our students who rarely get trips away from home. We are so blessed to have this great organization in our community giving such wonderful support for our needy youth.”
All of the proceeds from the Assistance League's local thrift store go to endeavors such as Operation School Bell, which gives needy kids clothing, a pair of shoes, new books and more.
Over 12 consecutive days, Walmart awarded a total of $1.5 million to 140 organizations across the country that are providing basic needs and services such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care in their communities.
