AWC fair to draw La Paz seniors
Comments 0 | Recommend 0La Paz high school seniors can get a jump start on post-secondary education choices at the Broaden Your Horizon career fair organized by Arizona Western College.
The event will be held Feb. 20 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Parker High School.
This is a student-driven fair, the brainchild of the Parker High student council, said Barry Holloway, AWC learning support coordinator.
"What the students hope to take away from the fair they incorporated into the design," Holloway said. "They want to know what professionals do on the job. They want to experience doing rather than listening."
Holloway directs AWC's interactive TV and online courses and helps long-distance students be effective online learners through online registration, tutoring and library services.
Online learning is convenient because it is available 24/7. Students do not have to drive to or park at school, or conform to a set schedule.
"TV and online courses are vital for students who can't make it to campus and who have responsibilities to families and jobs that would keep them away from the campus," Holloway said.
The fair will feature 40 display tables with a lot of representation from the Colorado River Indian Tribe (CRIT), including recruiters from the CRIT Hospital, fire department, fish and game department, and library.
There will also be representatives from American Red Cross, U.S. Navy, Border Patrol, Quartzsite Fire Department, Horizon Community Bank of Parker, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, AWC and Mohave Community College, among others.
"We hope to have 700 students," Holloway said. "We'll hit every student from Parker and Salome High School since we're busing them in."
He said that the fair gives students a chance to see what support systems they can access and how to achieve career goals. All students attend four workshops aimed at meeting Arizona state standards.
For freshmen, it is career exploration; sophomores have hands-on-banking (budgeting); juniors have character development; and for seniors, learning services. Seniors will learn how to apply to college, how to get scholarships, what a degree will do for a student and what options are available, such as the military.
Broaden Your Horizon has free admission, and no advance registration is required. For more information, call Holloway at 669-2214.
