Tax company offering free service for some
Comments 0 | Recommend 0March 10, 2008 - 4:40PM
For the remainder of March, a local tax preparation company is offering free tax preparation to some professions it believes give back to the community.
Liberty Tax Service of Yuma, 741 S. 4th Ave., has announced it will prepare tax returns at no charge for people who work in law enforcement, who are teachers, hospital workers or firefighters.
"Lots of people are unsung heroes, trying to make a difference by helping their communities in positive ways," said Martin A. Garcia, manager of Liberty Tax Service. "Liberty Tax Service wants to let them know that their efforts and contributions do not go unnoticed."
And for those who don't have a filing requirement but qualify for a rebate check, such as retired veterans and individuals receiving Social security, Liberty Tax Service will also provide free tax preparation.
"We do this so the community will get to know us," said office manager Karin Ruiz. "And it's also a way for us to give back to the community."
Liberty Tax Service provides computerized income tax preparation, electronic filing and refund loans. It also offers a money-back guarantee and free tax return checking.
Founded in 1997 by CEO John T. Hewitt, a pioneer in the tax industry, Liberty Tax has prepared over 5 million individual income tax returns and currently operates over 2,700 offices throughout the United States and Canada.
Ruiz said since the Liberty office in Yuma only opened last year, they didn't get much of a response for the service.
"We only did a handful of returns last year. It wasn't as many as we would have liked. We definitely hope to get more this year."
She added that the free tax service isn't just limited to people in those professions who reside in Yuma. It's available to them no matter what city they live in or where in the county they reside.
There are no hidden fees or conditions, Ruiz stated. She added that Liberty’s trained professionals will dig for every deduction, credit and tax break.
"There is no obligation and we aren't going to ask you to sign a contract or anything like that."
For an appointment, call 329-7805.
