Sex offender back in custody
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A man convicted of attempted sexual assault is back in custody after being arrested for failure to register as a sex offender living in Yuma.
Raymond R. Powells, 40, was arrested at a home at 267 S. 15th Ave. by Yuma County sheriff's deputies responding to an anonymous tip, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
He remained in the Yuma County jail Thursday.
Convicted of attempted sexual assault in 1994 in Yuma County, the sheriff's office said, Powells moved to Washington state and was convicted there twice for failure to register as a sex offender.
Powells is also considered a convicted sex offender absconder in Washington, the sheriff's office said. He is believed to have been in the Yuma area since February.
If Washington authorities want to prosecute him, Powells will be extradited once he has faced prosecution in Yuma County, said sheriff's spokesman Capt. Eben Bratcher.
