CHILDREN'S AUTHORS TO SIGN BOOKS

  Children's authors John and Darla Schofield will sign copies of their new book, "My First Pair of Glasses," from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hastings Books Music and Videos, 2820 S. 4th Ave.The story chronicles the adventures of Brandon Snaggletooth as he makes his first visit to the optometrist, accompanied by his sister, Malia, and his mother, Mommy Snaggletooth.The book is available for sale at Hastings and on Amazon.com.

GOP TO HOLD FUNDRAISER BARBECUE

  The Yuma County Republican Central Committee will hold a barbecue dinner fundraiser May 20 at Caballero Park.

  It begins at 6 p.m. at Ramada 11. To get there, turn from Avenue A onto West Desert Sun Drive.

YALE MEETS MAY 20

  YALE - Yuma Area Law Enforcement - will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at American Legion Post 19, 2575 S. Virginia Ave.

  The meeting begins with a. social period, followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

SPAYING, NEUTERING OFFERED

  The Humane Society of Yuma is offering low-cost spaying and neutering of pets for area residents on limited incomes.

  To qualify, residents must complete an application and provide proof of income and proof of residency anywhere in Yuma County.Animals must be in good health, free of fleas and ticks and under 5 years of age. For more information, visit www.hsoyuma.com.

PRESCHOOL APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR DISTRICT 1

  Yuma Elementary School District 1 is accepting applications for its preschool program for the 2008-09 school year.

  To be eligible, children must be 4 years of age before Sept. 1, live within the District 1 attendance boundaries and meet state financial guidelines.

  When applying, bring birth certificate, immunization record and proof of residency, such as 2007 income tax form.

  Applications will be accepted at the North End Preschool on the Pecan Grove School campus, 6th Street and 24th Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June 12. Applications can be dropped off on Fridays in May from 8 a.m. to noon at Desert Mesa Preschool, 2350 S. Avenue 7-1/2E.
