Drugs, smugglers seized in Wellton region

Five separate smuggling attempts over a four-day period yielded 822 pounds of marijuana and 12 arrests for U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Wellton Station.

The seizures and arrests all took place between Thursday and Sunday, according to a Tuesday press statement from the patrol.

On Thursday, agents working in Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge discovered four bundles of marijuana that had been abandoned in the Antelope Hills, according to the statement. The marijuana weighed more than 174 pounds.

On Friday, agents tracked a group west of Organ Pipe National Monument. They apprehended two subjects with three burlap bags of marijuana. The drugs weighed more than 135 pounds.

On Saturday, morning agents discovered signs that an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) had crossed the international border from Mexico, according to the statement. Agents encountered the ATV - along with two subjects and 10 bundles of marijuana - near the Aztec Hills. Agents discovered two more bundles of marijuana near the Camino del Diablo. Altogether, the drugs weighed more than 322 pounds.

On Sunday, an agent manning a ground-based radar unit detected a group of eight subjects traveling near mile marker 94 on Instate 8. Agents arrested each person and seized four backpacks containing eight bundles of marijuana, which weighed more than 191 pounds.

Altogether the combined street value of the total marijuana seized was estimated at $657,000.
