Toddler hit by vehicle in Somerton lot

A toddler was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in Somerton Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, a 2-year-old boy had been in the parking lot of the Manuel Chavez Apartments, 500 S. Somerton Ave., when the incident occurred at about 4:46 p.m.

Arriving SCFD personnel found the toddler with injuries to his body.

“It was a little boy who was conscious and crying, which was a good sign,” said Javier Hernandez, SCFD fire captain.

“He was crying the whole time. He did have some abrasions on his belly and tire marks on his legs from contact with the vehicle.”

The boy was transported by paramedics to Yuma Regional Medical Center with possible internal injuries, SCFD reported. He is believed to be in serious but stable condition.

No information about the vehicle or the driver was available Wednesday. It was also unclear if any arrests had been made or tickets issued.

The incident is under investigation by Somerton police.
