Special YUHS meeting to consider budget, new principal
The Yuma High School District governing board will hold a special meeting at noon Monday in the governing board room at 3150 S. Avenue A.
The board will consider approval of a proposed budget for the 2008-2009 school year, according to a YUHSD news release. In other business, it will select among various candidates a new principal for Yuma High School, the release said.
The current principal, Jeff Magin, who has served in the position since 2003 and for 30 years in Yuma education, leaves July 1. Magin will then take over as principal of Central High School in El Centro.
Under Magin's leadership, YUHSD improved AIMS scores by 37 points in mathematics and 23 points in reading. Also, the school quadrupled the number of advanced placement courses and began offering dual credit courses through Arizona Western College, according to Superintendent Toni Badone.
Magin is originally from Holtville, where his mother still resides, and has a sister who is a counselor at Calexico High School. He completed his student teaching at Central High School and although he regrets leaving Yuma, his new position is a great professional opportunity, he said.
