Local state representatives receive humanitarian award

Two local lawmakers received a humanitarian award based on their voting decisions on bills that affected low-income immigrant families throughout Arizona.

On Tuesday, the Border Action Network, a membership-based organization that works with immigrant and border communities in southern Arizona, awarded Reps. Theresa Ulmer and Lynne Pancrazi, both D-Yuma, its 2008 Human Rights Champion Award.

"The award recognizes that they not only understand the importance but they put their vote behind that understanding," said Jennifer Allen, director of Border Action Network.

Allen said that the organization analyzed about 28 different bills ranging from health care, education, housing, workers rights, health care, civic participation and immigration and justice. Based on their voting records, about a dozen Arizona House members received the award for their commitment to protecting the human rights of all people.

"It is a privilege to be recognized for my service in the Legislature," Pancrazi said. "By treating everyone fairly and respecting everyone's human rights, we create stronger communities."

"I am very honored to receive this award for helping to stop legislation that would harm vulnerable people," Ulmer said. "This award is about supporting positive immigration reform and also increasing access to quality housing, education opportunities, rights for workers and health care."
