Governor bringing State of the State to Yuma

Yumans who want to hear the governor's State of the State address in person won't have to travel far.

Gov. Jan Brewer will be taking the annual speech on the road and one of her stops will be Yuma.

She is scheduled to present the address at 4 p.m. Thursday at Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza, in the council chambers, the Yuma Sun learned late Friday.

Brewer will present the official State of the State address during the Arizona Legislature's opening session Monday around noon to a joint session of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to Yuma Rep. Russ Jones.

In addition to Yuma, the governor will present the address in Tucson later in the week.

"This is the first time in recent history that I can recall a governor delivering a State of the State address in Yuma," said Greg Hyland, city spokesman.

He said the address is open to the public. If there is an overflow crowd, Conference Room 190 will be set up for people can observe the event live on television. It also will be televised live on City 73.

This is the second Yuma visit by the governor in recent months. She was here in October and signed two bills into law that applied to Yuma County.

Brewer also presented the key for the Quartermaster Depot state park to the city. The ceremony launched an agreement for the city to operate the historic park until the state recovers financially.
