ADOT 16th Street reconstruction

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is widening 16th Street between just east of Arizona Avenue and Yuma Palms Parkway/Sunridge Drive. The project is scheduled to take 10 months, with completion anticipated in late summer 2010.

Traffic has been reduced to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions on Interstate 8 at the 16th Street exit. Temporary traffic barriers have been placed on the interstate restricting traffic to one lane, allowing crews and equipment to safely access areas under construction. Speed limits in the area have been reduced and will be strictly enforced through the construction zone.

No work is scheduled between Thursday and next Sunday in observance of Thanksgiving. Although no workers will be present, traffic control barriers will still direct traffic through the construction zone. Work is expected to resume Monday, Nov. 30.

For more information, call the project hot line at 1-877-397-5202, go on www.16thstreetwidening.com or e-mail 16thStreetWidening@azdot.gov.

16th-Arizona intersection improvements

The city's expansion of the 16th Street and Arizona Avenue intersection is nearly complete by contractor DPE, about six months ahead of original schedule and ahead of the contractor's goal. Traffic was expected to begin flowing on Arizona Avenue southbound from 16th Street by late afternoon Friday, and Arizona Avenue traffic north of 16th is expected to begin flowing on Wednesday.

However, the full range of traffic motion at this intersection will not be available due to the adjacent 16th Street reconstruction project administered by ADOT. Left turns will still be prohibited from westbound 16th to southbound Arizona to prevent additional backups to the flow of traffic along 16th Street.

Avenue A widening

Progress on Avenue A currently hinges upon telephone utility work. Demolition and reconstruction continues on the west side of Avenue A between 16th and 24th streets. Westbound traffic cannot cross from Avenue A onto residential streets south of 16th Street through 19th Street.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th Street and 24th Street and a water main improvement just south of 24th Street.

Through traffic during the duration of this project is advised to used 4th Avenue or Avenue B for north-south travel when possible. Motorists detouring through surrounding residential neighborhoods or who are using 8th Avenue are asked to please observe residential street speed limits of 25 mph.
Fog sealant

The city of Yuma's 2009 fall fog seal program is under way through about the second week of December. Fog seal is a fresh oil spray used to extend the life of street pavement three to five years. Next week, fog sealing will affect the following streets:

Nov. 23
  • 29th Street from Avenue 7E to Commerce Center Drive, north side of road.
  • 30th Street from Avenue 7E to Avenue 7-1/2E, north side of road.

Nov. 24
  • 29th Street from Avenue 7E to Commerce Center Drive south side of road.
  • 30th Street from Avenue 7E to Avenue 7-1/2E, south side of road.

48th Street/County 13th Street between 3E and 4E
City 48th Street/County 13th Street is expected be closed between Avenues 3E and 4E for private street reconstruction work that includes a new turn lane. Detour by using 40th Street.
