Slurry seal is a mixture of asphalt emulsion, water, sand and concrete. It provides a cost-effective new wearing surface that can extend the life of the pavement by at least five years.

“When applied to residential streets, the slurry seal takes up to eight hours from the time of application through the drying process,” said City of Yuma Street Maintenance Supervisor Mark Stewart. “Basically, the contractor can be in and out of an area rather quickly, with little inconvenience to neighborhood traffic.”

The City of Yuma Public Works Department employees will serve as the inspectors for the contractor applying the slurry seal.

City of Yuma Fog Seal program, week of Oct. 29
Technical issues have delayed the fog seal program. Beginning the week of Oct. 29, area subdivisions to be treated include the following:

• Villa Hermosa

• Parkway Place

30th Street, east of 21st Drive – Century Link
Century Link will install conduit, cable and equipment along and underneath 30th Street, in several locations east of 21st Drive. This 30-day project is expected to be complete in December.

Gas line repairs, 20-24th Streets, 1st-Maple Aves.
Southwest Gas will embark on a series of gas line repairs between 20th and 24th streets, with most work taking place in the alleys between 1st, Madison and Maple avenues. One phase of this 80-day project will involve lane restrictions on 24th Street between 1st Avenue and Maple Avenue.

Avenue A, 8th Street to 16th Street
The reconstruction of Avenue A between 8th Street and 16th Street is under way. Plans call for reconstructing Avenue A in two-block increments to minimize impact on Avenue A residents.

Currently Avenue A is closed between 8th Street and 10th Street. Additionally the right eastbound lane of 8th Street is closed and left turns from westbound 8th Street are prohibited at Avenue A. 8th Street speed limit is reduced in the construction zone as well.

The overall project will also be timed so that work directly in front of O.C. Johnson Elementary School will take place during the school's winter break.

Giss Parkway, Gila Street to Main Street
Time Warner Cable will be working for five days on the north side of Giss Parkway between Gila and Main streets. Drivers are asked to use caution, especially regarding visibility during turns onto Giss Parkway from Gila Street, Maiden Lane or Main Street. Work is expected to be done by Oct. 31.

Avenue 3E Bridge, Gila Ridge Road to 24th Street
A contractor working for ADOT is improving and widening the Avenue 3E Bridge located between Gila Ridge Road and 24th Street in Yuma. The project is a cooperative effort between ADOT and the City of Yuma and is scheduled for completion in summer 2013.

The project includes widening the bridge over the railroad tracks from two to six lanes with a center median, new pavement, and pedestrian walkways. Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained during expansion, which will be built to include three lanes each direction. There will be some speed limit reductions during this project.

32nd St. manhole inspections, B to 3E - Century Link
Isolated lane restrictions are possible along 32nd Street between Avenue B and Avenue 3E as Century Link will inspect 52 manholes over an approximately 30-day period to end by Dec. 1.

32nd Street westbound at Bonanza
The right westbound lane of 32nd Street will be closed in the vicinity of Bonanza Avenue for private contractor installation of a driveway into an auto dealership's new building. Work is expected to be complete by Nov. 16.

Avenue C, 8th Street to 1st Street
Workers continue on the Yuma County Avenue C reconstruction project. Avenue C is open but with narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit following paving.
