Slurry seal returns to Giss this weekend

The city of Yuma Public Works Department continues its fall slurry seal program through Nov. 16.

Weekend work is anticipated today, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Giss Parkway will be closed from 1st Avenue to Main Street, especially including the traffic circle/roundabout at Madison Avenue. Detour by taking 1st Avenue north to 1st Street, then 1st Street to Gila Street to rejoin Giss.

Also today, sealing work will take place on:

• 22nd Drive north of 24th Street.

• 18th Avenue south of 24th Street.

• 17th Avenue south of 24th Street.

On Tuesday, slurry will be applied in the Dunes subdivision.

The overall project generally encompasses an area south of 16th Street and west of Avenue A. Some work will be done in the downtown area to include Giss Parkway and Madison Ave.

Slurry seal is a mixture of asphalt emulsion, water, sand and concrete. It provides a cost-effective new wearing surface that can extend the life of the pavement by at least five years.

The city of Yuma Public Works Department employees will serve as the inspectors for the contractor applying the slurry seal.

City of Yuma fog seal

City of Yuma Street Maintenance crews continue applying fog seal in the upcoming week. Starting Monday, work will take place in the Parkway Place subdivision, south of 24th Street.

Avenue A, 8th Street to 16th Street - 10th-12th closed

Pavement has been placed on Avenue A between 8th Street and 10th Street, and neighborhood traffic can now use Avenue A from just south of 8th Street through 10th Street. Until southbound traffic is opened at 8th Street, the right eastbound lane of 8th Street remains closed and left turns from westbound 8th Street are prohibited at Avenue A. The 8th Street speed limit is reduced in the construction zone as well.

The main work zone now is between 10th Street and 12th Street. Currently, Avenue A is closed completely from the southern edge of 10th Street to the northern edge of 12th Street. 12th Street remains open to through traffic and for easy access to the elementary school.

Plans call for reconstructing Avenue A in two-block increments to minimize impact on Avenue A residents.

The overall project will also be timed so that work directly in front of O.C. Johnson Elementary School will take place during the school's winter break.

Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained during expansion of the bridge, which will be built to include three lanes each direction when complete. There will be some speed limit reductions during this project.
