Elderly pedestrian killed while crossing street late at night

An elderly Yuma man was killed when he was struck by a car Monday night while attempting to cross a street.

According to Yuma police, at about 11:30 p.m. the 80-year-old pedestrian was crossing to the south side of the street in the 400 block of West 24th Street when he was struck by a grey Toyota passenger car that was heading eastbound on 24th Street.

Officer Joe Franklin of the Yuma Police Department said the grey Toyota stopped at the scene, but there was also a white or light-in-color 1990s Toyota Previa van that was travelling directly behind the passenger car involved in the accident.

“The van had been a witness to the collision,” Franklin said.

The pedestrian was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Yuma Police Department is requesting the driver of the van, or any other witnesses to the collision, contact Investigator Lawson at (928) 783-4421, or 78-Crime (to remain anonymous).
