Marijuana in baby stroller, says CBP

A teenage couple enlisted their infant and a baby stroller in a recent attempt to smuggle marijuana through the U.S. Port of Entry at San Luis, Ariz., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The couple, a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, were arrested and turned over to the San Luis Police Department after a CBP officer discovered nearly 15 pounds in the stroller Saturday, CBP said in a news release issued Thursday.

Teresa Small, a supervisory CBP officer at the port, said the marijuana, valued at $34,584, was concealed in the liner of the stroller as the infant sat in the carriage.

She said the age of the smugglers and the use of a stroller made the smuggling attempt unusual for San Luis.

The pot was discovered after the minors, both unidentified U.S. citizens, tried to push the stroller through the pedestrian lane from Mexico.

“It saddens me to see such young kids involved in drug smuggling,” port director William K. Brooks said in the news release. “Not only are they a young couple, but they included their own baby in this illegal activity. It just is not right.”

The seizure was one of six made by San Luis CBP between June 24 and June 27 that netted marijuana with a total street value of nearly $400,000, CBP said.
