Students collect books for Reading with TRIO Day

Arizona Western College’s Student Support Services (KEYS) Program and student leadership group, Club SOTE, are holding a children’s book drive and reading the donated books to local children.

Students will be collecting books until March 14. Donated books will be given to the Rancho Viejo Head Start Program sponsored by Western Arizona Council of Governments on March 15. Students will read the books as part of their Reading with TRIO Day.

Books appropriate for children 3-5 years of age will be accepted on AWC’s Main Campus, 2020 S. Avenue 8E, at the Student Support Services (KEYS) Program located on the second floor of the 3C building.

San Luis building dedication set for retired district board member

On Tuesday, AWC’s San Luis Learning Center will be dedicated to retired district governing board member Alicia Valdez after 18 years of service to the board.

The community is invited to the dedication ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at the AWC San Luis Learning Center, 1340 N. 8th Ave. in San Luis.

Russia Symposium Wednesday

A Russia Symposium will be held on Wednesday at the AWC Conference Center from 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. featuring keynote speaker Andy Riess. Riess, a former Russian historian, currently works for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

Riess’ topics will include:

• Russia’s tenacious control of vast reservoirs of natural resources and the use of said resources to wield political and economic control over its neighbors.

• Its contributions to literary, religious and philosophical thought.

• Whether Russia as a federation is endangered.

Fine Arts Showcase caters to local families

The AWC Theatre’s Fine Arts Showcase Feb. 17-18 will be an evening of family-themed entertainment.

The event will feature family-oriented music, theatre and other art performances by faculty, students and staff.

Curtains open at 7:30 p.m. on both days. Admission is $5, five nonperishable food items or five items of clean, wearable clothing.

Pakistani-American author to discuss book

The AWC Writing Center will present author Daniyal Mueenudin in a lecture, “Straddling Words and Worlds: Life as a Pakistani/American Writer,” on Feb. 21.

Mueenudin is the author of a best-selling short story collection, “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders.”

An author reading and question-answer session will be held in the 3C building on campus at 1:40 p.m. An additional author reading, question-answer session and book signing will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Professor to discuss the use of Nazi data in his studies

“Ethics in Science: the Use of Nazi Scientific date in Modern Science” will be presented in the Schoening Conference Center-South Wing from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 by the AWC chemistry department.

Keynote speaker Dr. Robert Pozos, a professor of biology from San Diego State University, will discuss the use of Nazi data in his research during a free lecture open to the public.

An optional buffet lunch will follow for $15 a person, with proceeds going to benefit the AWC/Northern Arizona University Science Club.
