“We are going to add a twist to the event. We want to promote local talent with artistic contributions and contests,” said Arturo Magaña, who is organizing the event.
The Cinco de Mayo fiesta will be held on Saturday at the Joe Muñoz Park at 6 p.m.
Seeking to promote local talent, organizers have included Somerton Middle School’s Rondalla as well as Mexican music singer Jesús Martínez. The Desert Sonora Folkloric Dance Group as well as Emma Luna’s Dance Group will be featured during the first part of the program.
The second part of the celebration will feature the Somerton Middle School Folkloric Dance group, charro José Luis Torres and singer Kamyla Ruíz.
The third part of the program will include a talent show led by Sal Troccoli. Winners for each of the categories including dance, poetry and other arts will be announced.
Art exhibits by Angélica Villaseñor, Ana Karen, and Manuel Cuén will be featured as well.
A jalapeño-eating contest will also be held, where the person who can eat the most jalapeños wins. Local singer Sergio García will close the show and Ritmo Latino will provide live music.
The Battle of Puebla is commemorated every year in memory of the bravery of the Mexican military when they went up against French forces during their occupation of México.
