Wind advisory issued for Yuma County
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It continues to be an extreme weather week for Yuma County as wind gusts of over 35 mph are expected today.
The blustery forecast led to the National Weather Service issuing a wind advisory, which was in effect until 10 p.m. Wednesday. The breezy conditions are due to a jet stream moving into the southwest part of the country that marks the end of six days of unseasonably high temperatures.
Excessive heat advisories were issued by NWS over the past three days as daily highs were between 109 and 113 degrees and set daily records for this time of the year.
Overall, the last six days saw triple digit high temperatures. Temperatures typically rise into the mid-90s in mid-May.
Tom Kines, who works for AccuWeather, YumaSun.com's weather information provider, said that winds have already started to pickup in the Yuma area.
"We will see gusts up up to 35 mph by the lunch hour," he said.
Kines expects the winds to subside overnight and by Thursday range between 15 and 25 mph. However, the winds are expected to pick up again Thursday evening, and continue into Friday with gusts back up to 35 mph.
"The jet stream will push father south and as it does it will cause it to be windy across the southwest part of the country, which is also responsible for the cooling down of the weather," said Kines. "We had six days in a row where temperatures were above 100. After today, temperatures will be below normal through the weekend. Normally, we should be in the middle 90s.
"Over the weekend, we will probably see the jet stream retreat north again," he said.
