San Luis councilwoman undergoes heart surgery
San Luis, Ariz., City Councilwoman Gloria Torres is recovering following quadruple bypass surgery at Yuma Regional Medical Center on Thursday, her son said.
“My mom is out of surgery,” Rafael Torres said in a text message to Bajo El Sol. “She had quadruple bypass surgery and she is doing fine. Thank you for everyone's prayers.”
Torres, who also serves on the Gadsden Elementary School District's governing board, has been hospitalized for the past week, her son said.
“My mother had been feeling bad for several days, since the middle of last week,” Rafael Torres said. “On Sunday in the morning, she went to the emergency room (at YRMC) and the doctor ordered her hospitalized. On Tuesday they did an exam that found that not one but (four) arteries were blocked 70 to 90 percent.”
He said the doctor said her heart had not been damaged by the blocked arteries.
Torres, 62, has served on the San Luis council for the past year and had served a prior term on the council in the late 1990s.
