The Yuma Union High School District is looking for about 150 volunteers for its regional Academic Decathlon on Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2.
This year, more than 160 students from Cochise, Greenlee, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma counties are expected to compete in the 2013 Region III Arizona Academic Decathlon. The event will be held at Gila Ridge High School, 7150 E. 24th St.
“This is a great opportunity for members of our community to see the high quality of work our students here in Yuma County, along with students across the state, have done throughout the year in preparation for this challenging academic event,” stated a YUHSD news release.
“The Academic Decathlon competition includes tests in art, music, language and literature, mathematics, economics, science and social science. In addition, there are communication tests that include writing an essay, delivering a prepared and an impromptu speech, and an interview.”
Volunteers will be used to conduct the 10 events, administer and proctor tests as well as judge speeches and interviews, evaluate essays and oversee the quiz relay.
“Approximately 150 volunteers are needed over the two-day competition to make it a success,” YUHSD said. “Training will be provided to volunteers in whatever role they select.”
