One man seriously injured in highway accident

One man was seriously injured in a three-car collision late Tuesday afternoon on Highway 95 near the intersection of Avenue D.

Although the accident was still under investigation, Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department spokesman Robby Rodriguez was able to say that one of the vehicles involved, a red Ford Mustang, rolled over in the accident and came to rest upside down, trapping the driver inside.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was wearing his seat belt and was lodged between the steering wheel and the roof and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

“One paramedic was inside the vehicle to start care while firefighters used the Jaws of Life to get him out,” Rodriguez said.

The accident occurred a few hundred yards from the intersection with Avenue D, according to Rodriguez. He added that the road was expected to be closed for several hours while the investigation was being conducted and the debris cleaned up.

The second vehicle involved was a mid-size pickup with two occupants, neither of whom were injured. The third vehicle was a full-size pickup with a single occupant who also did not require medical attention.

The victim was transported by Somerton/Cocopah ambulance to Yuma Regional Medical Center.
