High risk search warrant closes Ave. A, Kofa H.S.
Kofa High School was locked down Thursday morning as a precautionary measure while Yuma police served a high-risk search warrant at the nearby residence of a suspect in a recent shooting.
According to the Yuma Police Department spokesman Clint Norred, the warrant, served at 2625 S. Avenue A, was in reference to the April 14 shooting of 37-year-old Jamie Turner behind a Yuma convenience store.
Police arrested Edgar Rivera Avalos, 26, of Yuma, at the residence. He was booked into the Yuma County jail on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and drive-by shooting.
Norred said Avalos is considered the only suspect in the investigation into the shooting. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Yuma Justice Court at 1 p.m. today.
In addition, Avenue A between Rosewood to West Ridge drives was closed from 10:15 and 10:50 a.m., Norred said.
The Yuma Police Department's special enforcement team served the warrant along with other officers. No injuries occurred but Yuma Regional Medical Center had been told about the police action.
Turner was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center after being shot multiple times shortly after 2 p.m. April 14 in the alley between 11th Avenue and Avenue A, behind Circle K. Further information about his condition was not available from YRMC or police.
YPD is continuing with its investigation, Norred said Thursday.
