I-8 car crash victims not from Yuma

None of the three people killed earlier this month when a pickup and semi-truck collided along Interstate 8 were from the Yuma area.

The driver of the pickup has been identified as 67-year-old Gary L. Sharbono. His 38-year-old son, Christopher B. Sharbono, was a passenger in the vehicle. They were both from Glendale.

The driver of the semi-truck has been identified as 56-year-old Andrew Kubal of New York.

Next of kin notification has been made to the families of the victims.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 11:28 a.m. on Nov. 5, along I-8 near Winterhaven Drive.

The pickup, according to the CHP, was traveling westbound on I-8 approaching Winterhaven Drive when the driver, for unknown reasons, lost control.

After losing control, the pickup then crossed the center median of the freeway and went into the eastbound lanes, where it collided with the semi-truck.

Multiple agencies from the Yuma and Winterhaven areas responded to the collision.

CHP said I-8 eastbound was closed for a short time, but later reopened as traffic was diverted through the area by using the onramps at Winterhaven Drive.
