Mammogram clinic for at-risk women

Women at risk for breast cancer are invited to take advantage of a Friday mammogram clinic the San Luis Walk-In Clinic, 1896 E. Babbit Lane.

Hosted by the Regional Center for Border Health (RCBH), the mammograms will be performed from 8 a.m. to noon by Assured Imaging of Tucson.

Women 50 and over are automatically classified as being “at-risk.”

The mammograms are free to women who qualify for the Arizona Department of Health Services Well Woman HealthCheck Program, which targets uninsured or underinsured women ages 40-64. It provides free breast and cervical cancer screening tests and diagnostic services for eligible women.

Women covered by an insurance plan will be asked to present their insurance cards. For other women, the cost of the mammogram is $150.

Free health screenings and education will also be offered, including screenings for diabetes, cholesterol and high-blood pressure as well as free or low-cost family planning services to Yuma County residents.

To schedule an appointment and/or for more information about eligibility for the program, contact Sarah Lydick, director of the RCBH Woman's Health Division, at shlydick@rcfbh.org or 627-9222.

The RCBH has received a Title 10 contract, a national family planning program. As such, “our coordinator can advise young mothers and teens and anyone thinking about starting a family, on what it entails and if they need contraceptives,” said Alex Bejarano, community liaison and director of public relations.

He noted that Amanda Aguirre, the center's president and CEO and former state senator, has long championed breast cancer awareness. One of her most memorable accomplishments as a lawmaker is the Pink Ribbon Awareness License Plate, which raises funds for the treatment and diagnostics of women with breast and/or cervical cancer.

The special Arizona state plate costs $25, with $17 going to the Well Woman HealthCheck Program and the remaining $8 to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department.
