Loyd Royal is named employee of the year for Yuma County
Comments 0 | Recommend 0This month marks 22 years of employment with Yuma County for Loyd R. Royal, who has spent his years serving in the Public Works Department as an equipment technician.
All those years and his dedication to his work paid off for Royal Friday, when he was named 2008 Yuma County Employee of the Year.
"I was surprised to be nominated," Royal said. "All the people who were nominated, I didn't think I did anything better than they did."
But Royal's co-workers disagreed, saying he was "on everybody's list" of top employee nominees.
Royal received a $1,000 award for his achievement. He was chosen from a pool of 19 nominated employees.
The two top runners-up, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Sue Stallworth and Community Planning Coordinator Nancy Ngai, each received $500.
Candidates for the award must meet the following criteria: be county employees for more than two years, promote the county's core values, receive strong performance ratings, save the county money or demonstrate exceptional community service.
Nominations for the award were screened by the Merit Award System Board, which is appointed by the Yuma County Board of Supervisors.
In addition to the Employee of the Year award, Friday's ceremony at the Historic Yuma Theatre also honored county Health District employee Michael LeBrun with the Yuma County Safety Award.
The county also honored employees who had hit service milestones and those who had passed away in the last year.
