Self-advocacy event comes to Yuma

  The Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and The ARC of Yuma will sponsor a self-advocacy meeting in Yuma on Oct. 20 for residents with disabilities.

  It will begin at 6 p.m. at the Yuma Community Food Bank, 2404 E. 24th St. There is no cost to attend.

  The event will give area residents with disabilities to network with one another to learn about the value self-advocacy, the council said in a news release.

  Reservations are due Oct. 17 by calling The ARC of Yuma at 388-5772. For more information, call Dawn Meyers at 1-928-680-3468.

Yuma Jazzercise has special class
 
 Yuma Jazzercise will hold a special class Saturday in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the auditorium of Stone Ridge Church, 6300 E. 24th St.

  The event will include a guest speaker plus breast cancer prevention information and giveaways.

  The church is on the corner of Araby Road and 24th Street. Call 502-9770 for information.

Fundraising barbecue set Sunday

  A barbecue dinner will be served Sunday as a fundraiser to help a Yuma resident pay medical bills.
  The benefit dinner will take place noon to 5 p.m. at the Eagles Hall, 225 S. 1st Ave., to help Maria "Peggy" Martinez. Tickets are $5.

  Proceeds will help cover medical expenses for Martinez, who is on the list for a liver transplant.

Tax preparers needed

  The Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition is seeking area residents interested in serving as tax preparation volunteers.

  The coalition, consisting of the Yuma Community Foundation, Chicanos Por La Causa and other organizations, will provide training to volunteers in Yuma, Somerton and San Luis, Ariz.

  Volunteers who can speak Spanish also are sought. For more inforamtion, call Chicanos Por La Causa at 627-2042.
