The annual membership meeting of the Yuma County and the Rio Colorado Chapter of the Arizona historical societies will be held Wednesday in the Sanguinetti House gardens, 240 S. Madison Ave.
Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner at 6. After a short business meeting, Michael Vandevelde, engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation, will speak on the construction of Laguna Dam, which is 100 years old this year.

Women urged to take
part in book discussion
Women are encouraged take read "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" and then take part in a book club-style discussion as part of the 2009 Women's Expo.
The expo will be May 9 at the Yuma Civic Center, and the discussion will take place at noon. Those taking part in the discussion will also learn how to start their own book clubs.
The discussion, titled Read, Relax and Reflect, is presented by the Yuma County Library District.
Written by Kim Edwards, “The Memory Keeper's Daughter” is a best-selling novel about parallel lives, familial secrets and the redemptive power of love.

celebrate Community Learners
The public is invited to join Arizona Western College and Northern Arizona University-Yuma in honoring their students who are residents of San Luis, Ariz., Gadsden and Somerton.
The Community of Learners Ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. May 7 at Cesar Chavez Cultural Center, 1015 N. Main St. in San Luis, Ariz. Entrance is through Joe Orduno Park and Juan Sanchez Boulevard.

Credit union hosts financial
planning program in Spanish
AEA Federal Credit Union will offer a financial planning program for Spanish speakers on May 7.
"Understanding Credit" will be offered in Spanish at 4 p.m. at the Foothills Library, 13226 E. South Frontage Road.
The program is designed to teach people about the various aspects of using credit safely, how to avoid credit scams and how to protect or rebuild credit.

Spanish class offered
Adult Literacy Plus of Southwest Arizona is offering an intermediate conversational Spanish class starting Monday.
The eight-week class will be held Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $55. Students can pre-register until 3 p.m. on Monday.
A minimum of 10 people is required to start a class. For information or to pre-register, call Gina Acevedo at 343-9363.
